March (Bandroom) Madness...

It's hard to believe but March is already here! We have quite a jam packed schedule of events this month so I wanted to take a second to highlight some of the items on the calendar.


Also, did you know March is national Music in our schools month, a month long celebration of the impact music has in our schools and in our students lives? Join me in celebrating the occasion by visiting the SEMS facebook page and leaving a 5 star review if you feel that music at SEMS has made an impact on your student.


Upcoming schedule:


On Tuesday March 10th, we will have a special guest visiting our 7th and 8th grade band classes. Mrs. Windy Fullagar is a long time band director from the Charlotte area who has a vast and expansive resume of credentials. She will be in the SEMS band room to listen to and give feedback to the students in preparation for the upcoming Music Performance Assessment. Mrs. Fullagar now serves as the Arts Curriculum Director for all of the Charlotte Mecklenberg School District. Students are expected to show our visitors the upmost respect and demonstrate their falcon pride while a visitor is in the band room.


Thursday March 12th is our Pre-MPA concert at SEHS. The 6, 7, and 8th grade bands will be performing along with the SEHS concert band and wind ensemble. Concert start time is 7pm. Students must report by 6:45pm wearing the black dress pants, black SEMS band polos and black shoes. This is a graded concert and all students are required to stay for the duration of the concert.


Tuesday March 17th Mr. Phillip Riggs will be visiting the 8th grade band to listen to and provided last minute feedback prior to the MPA event. Mr. Riggs has a long list of credentials including most recently the 2016 Grammy Winning Music Educator of the year. Mr. Riggs is currently the band director at the North Carolina School of Science and Math in Durham, NC. Students are expected to show our visitors the upmost respect and demonstrate their falcon pride while a visitor is in the band room.


Friday March 20th is our Cafe Jazz concert at SEHS in the cafeteria starting at 7pm. This is a benefit concert for Mrs. Willard has was recently diagnosed with brain cancer. The SEMS and SEHS Jazz band will be performing. All band students and families are encouraged to attend and bring a donation to help the Willard family with treatment expenses. There will be coffee and deserts served. Parents are asked to sign up to bring a desert to share.


Monday March 23rd, the 7th grade band will be traveling to their Music Performance Assessment at Northwest Guilford HS. The band's scheduled performance time is 10:45am. Students will be bringing home permission slips next week. Only students that complete their music pass-offs will be able to attend the field trip. Please also note that only students that complete the MPA performance will be eligible for our May Carowinds Trip.


Tuesday March 24th, the 8th grade band will be traveling to their Music Performance Assessment at Northwest Guilford HS. The band's scheduled performance time is 12:30pm. Students will be bringing home permission slips next week. Only students that complete their music pass-offs will be able to attend the field trip. Please also note that only students that complete the MPA performance will be eligible for our May Carowinds Trip.
