50th Anniversary Band Commission (UPDATE 12/24)

Southeast Middle School first opened its doors for the 1969-1970 school year. The school first opened as a Junior High school which housed grade 7, 8 & 9.

To commemorate the 50 year anniversary, the band program would like to explore the prospect of having a special piece of music commissioned and dedicated to the past directors and students of the Southeast Middle School (Junior High) Band.

The commissioned piece would be premiered here at the school and then begin publication to the general public after our premier performance. The published work would prominently display the dedication to the past students and band directors of the Southeast Middle School.

Commissioning a work can be one of the most artistically enriching experiences for our school, community, and students.

Who will write the piece?

It gives me great pleasure to announce that composer Mekel Rogers, a local NC composer, has agreed to write the music for our commission. Mekel has a vast library of already published music through the FJH music publishing company. You can visit his website, www.mekelrogers.com to learn more about him.

How much does it cost to have a piece of music commissioned?

The cost of a commission is $2000 plus cost of travel for Mekel Rogers to visit the school and work with the students to prepare for the premiere.

When would the piece be finished/performed?

Mekel Rogers has agreed to deliver the music to us in early February for a performance on our May concert (May 14th) this spring.

How can I help with the commission?

If you are able to donate, any amount will help. Checks can be made out to the Southeast Band Boosters. Please write “Commission” in the memo line. You can also make donation to the boosters PayPal account by visiting the band website:

Contributions can also be made through our DonorsChoose Page.

Any donation (up to $50) will be doubled by DonorsChoose if you use the Promo Code LIFTOFF at checkout.

Please also consider sharing the above link and promo code on your personal social media profiles as a way to help us spread the word.

Help us connect with band members past. Do you have relatives that attended the Southeast Junior High School in the early years of its existence? The school opened in 1969-70 so students that attended the school that year would be between the ages of 62-65. Mr. Leib would love to connect the current band students with former students who were in the band during those first days of the schools existence. If you have anyone that would like to come meet with Mr. Leib and the current band students, please send an email to Mr. Leib (leiba@gcsnc.com)
